NMC Breastfeeding Management Courses
The Nursing Mothers' Council offers
training programs for those who want to become breastfeeding counselors
as well as for healthcare professionals seeking comprehensive
breastfeeding information (current
workshops
). Courses are taught by International
Board Certified Lactation Consultants and other experts in the field and
participants qualify for nursing contact hours and LCERP's (LCERP's can
be used as a pathway towards the IBLCE certification exam requirments).
Current Breastfeeding
Management
This
comprehensive training prepares participants to counsel breastfeeding mothers and is offered
once a year on two non-consecutive weekends. The training
includes:

Physiology of lactation;

Biochemistry and immunological properties of breast
milk;
-
Common
breastfeeding problems;
-
Pumping
and storage of breast milk;
-
Weaning
and separation;
-
Special
situations;
-
Returning to work;
-
Counseling methods; and
-
Grief
and loss.
Advanced Breastfeeding
Management
This
two day training is for professionals who want in-depth breastfeeding
education and for those who plan to take the certifying exam offered
by IBLCE. The advanced training is offered
once a year in early spring and includes:
- Breastfeeding the neurologically impaired
infant;
- Breastfeeding the medically complex
infant;
- Induced lactation/relactation;
- Breast surgery;
- Critical evaluation of research;
- Exam format;
- Literature review;
- Exam strategies and establishing a study plan;
and
- Case studies and a practice
exam.
