Childbirth Educator Training Programs

Continuing Education

Workshops are given on current issues in childbirth education in the greater Boston area.  These are suitable for childbirth educators, doulas, maternity nurses, midwives and others who work with birthing women and their families.  Contact hours are available for nurses and childbirth educators.

Childbirth Educator Certification

BACE has been training childbirth educators for over 40 years.  Features that make the program unique include:

·        Flexibility that enables trainees to fit the program into their family and work schedules;

·        Significantly more workshop hours than other certification programs;

·        Personal support and guidance from a training committee composed of experienced childbirth educators from the area; and

·        It is not a correspondence course.

The BACE certification program is designed to prepare qualified candidates to become certified childbirth educators in a period of twelve months. Graduates of the program will have the skills to develop curricula, be effective teachers, and support childbearing families towards the goal of informed choice.  The program includes a combination of:

  • Self-directed study;
  • Training workshops in teaching skills, perinatal information and breastfeeding;
  • Observation of childbirth classes;
  • Clinical observation of births;
  • Student teaching;
  • Final project;
  • Trial series, which will be observed and evaluated.

The minimum requirement for acceptance into the program is a high school diploma.  A baccalaureate degree is preferred and a combination of education and experience will be considered.  A personal interview may be required. Tuition is $1500 (additional $55 application fee). Rolling admissions. Certification lasts for 3 years.
