Breastfeeding: When to
Call for Help
If Your
Baby:
-
Will not
latch on.
-
Breastfeeds fewer than 8 times in 24
hours.
-
Has not
fed "well" for 2 consecutive feedings.
-
Seems
hungry all the time.
-
Makes
clicking noises while nursing.
-
Has slow
or no weight gain.
-
Before your mature milk comes in, has fewer than
2 wet diapers or fewer than 2 bowel movements in 24
hours.
-
After your mature milk comes in, has less than 6
wet diapers or fewer than 4 bowel movements in 24
hours.
-
Is not
feeding every 1 and 1/2 to 3 hours with one longer stretch (4-5 hours)
once a day.
If You:
-
Have
flat or inverted nipples.
-
Have
sore nipples.
-
Have
pain during a feeding.
-
Have any
cracks or bleeding on your nipple.
-
Do not
feel that your breasts are fuller before and softer after
feedings.
-
Do not
feel that your milk is letting down (i.e. feel a tingling sensation,
other breast leaking, sudden feeling of fullness).
-
Are
thinking of giving up.
-
Are
thinking of using a supplement.
-
Have a
sore, red area on your breast.
-
Have
flu-like symptoms with soreness or a red area on your
breast.
-
Are
uncertain of how things are going.
-
Wish to
rent or purchase a breast pump.
